Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith Celebrates 20th Anniversary with Theatrical Return

Fans of Star Wars have a treat in store—not only is the standout prequel film heading back to theaters, but it’s also getting a slick new poster to mark the occasion.

Star Wars enthusiasts are buzzing with excitement, light sabers practically humming, as Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith—the third chapter of George Lucas’s prequel trilogy—returns to cinemas for its 20th anniversary. The film will enjoy a special one-week run starting April 25, 2025.

According to the official Star Wars website, this release will debut in 4DX, a format that promises an immersive experience you can’t replicate on your couch. Picture this: the fiery showdown between Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi on Mustafar’s molten landscape, amplified by 4DX’s moving seats, bursts of air, and flashing lights. Will the water effects be swapped for lava? That’s still up in the air—we’ll find out soon enough.

The announcement mentions “several formats” for screenings but doesn’t elaborate beyond the 4DX highlight. Whether an IMAX DMR or Dolby Cinema version is in the works remains a mystery.

Interestingly, Attack of the Clones in 2002 was the only Star Wars film to get an official IMAX release, though it was a pre-digital film print, trimmed by 22 minutes to fit the platter.

The prequel trilogy often splits opinions, but Revenge of the Sith is widely regarded as the strongest of the trio. For younger fans, this could be their first chance to experience it on the big screen.

I caught Revenge of the Sith on its original run in 2005, digitally projected at London’s Odeon Leicester Square—just as I had with its predecessor, Attack of the Clones, the first film shot and shown digitally. But here’s a memory: during the climactic lightsaber duel, the screen went dark. The digital projector had crashed! After a brief pause, they switched to a 35mm backup print to finish the show.
