February 28, 2025 – Santa Fe, New Mexico
The entertainment world is reeling from the sudden and mysterious deaths of legendary actor Gene Hackman, 95, and his wife, classical pianist Betsy Arakawa, 64.
The couple, along with one of their three dogs, was found dead in their Santa Fe home on Wednesday, February 26, prompting an ongoing investigation by local authorities. As of today, February 28, the circumstances surrounding their passing remain unclear, with officials describing the situation as “suspicious” yet ruling out immediate signs of foul play.

Discovery and Initial Reports
According to the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to the couple’s residence on Old Sunset Trail in Hyde Park around 1:45 PM on Wednesday following a welfare check initiated by a concerned neighbor. A maintenance worker discovered the bodies after arriving for routine work and made an emotional 911 call, exclaiming,
“They’re not moving!” Hackman was found on the floor near the kitchen, appearing to have fallen, while Arakawa was located in a separate room on the bathroom floor. A German shepherd, one of the couple’s beloved pets, was found dead approximately 10 to 15 feet from Arakawa. Two other dogs were found alive—one near Arakawa described as “healthy,” and another outside the home.
Sheriff Adan Mendoza stated during a Thursday news conference, “It sounds like they had been deceased for quite a while,” though he refrained from speculating on the exact timeframe. Reports suggest the couple may have been dead for up to two weeks, with their bodies showing signs of partial mummification, raising further questions about the timeline and cause.
Investigation Underway
Law enforcement has labeled the deaths “suspicious enough in nature to require a thorough search and investigation,” according to a search warrant affidavit. Initial inspections by the fire department found no evidence of carbon monoxide poisoning or a gas leak, and tests by the New Mexico gas company confirmed the integrity of the home’s gas lines. Despite no visible signs of injury on either Hackman or Arakawa, Sheriff Mendoza noted “concerning” elements that have not been fully disclosed to the public, fueling speculation and uncertainty.
Hackman’s daughter, Leslie Anne Allen, 58, expressed her distress to Us Weekly, saying, “I’m very anxious to find out what happened and I just don’t know how long they had been deceased.” The actor’s two daughters and granddaughter Annie Hackman released a joint statement: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father, Gene Hackman, and his wife, Betsy. He was loved and admired by millions around the world for his brilliant acting career, but to us, he was always just Dad and Grandpa. We will miss him sorely and are devastated by the loss.”
A Storied Career and Quiet Retirement
Gene Hackman, a two-time Academy Award winner best known for iconic roles in The French Connection, Superman, and Unforgiven, retired from acting in 2004 after a prolific five-decade career. Since then, he and Arakawa, whom he married in 1991, lived a reclusive life in Santa Fe. The couple met in the mid-1980s at a California gym and maintained a low profile, occasionally spotted together in rare public outings—most recently in March 2024, when Hackman appeared frail but ambulatory.
Hackman had been open about his health struggles in later years, revealing in 2009 that his doctor advised him to step away from Hollywood due to stress on his heart. In a prescient interview before his death, he reflected on mortality, stating, “I guess we all think about that, especially when you get to be a certain age. I want to make sure that my wife and my family are taken care of.”
The Fate of Their Pets
The couple’s love for dogs was well-documented, with Hackman adopting a German shepherd named Gene during the filming of The Replacements in 1999. While one dog perished alongside them, the two surviving dogs have drawn concern from fans. Little is known about their breeds or current welfare, though authorities have confirmed they are being cared for as the investigation continues.
Hollywood and Fans Mourn
Tributes have poured in from across the industry. Jennifer Love Hewitt, who co-starred with Hackman in Heartbreakers (2001), told E! News, “I was one of many lucky enough to work with Gene Hackman. He was light and talent and goodness.” Social media posts on X reflect a mix of grief and curiosity, with fans sharing memories of his cinematic legacy while speculating about the unresolved mystery.
As the investigation progresses, authorities promise updates, but for now, the deaths of Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa remain shrouded in ambiguity, leaving a void in Hollywood and beyond. Stay tuned for the latest developments as this story unfolds.
